Early 96mm bore engines suffered from bore ovality cracking cylinders because the silicon pre-formed area of the bore was not as strong as Alusil and neither was the outer tube of pure alloy surrounding it so when the 93mm bore Boxster S casting was bored out 3mm larger (without increasing the O/D) the cylinders were weaker.
